With all types of holiday trips on the way, now is the time to make sure your car is up to par for a road excursion. You’ll want everything to be in top order.

Get it inspected!

A routine inspection or tune up is a proper starting point. Change your oil, check your air filter, check your tire pressure, rotate your tires, and top off the windshield washer fluid. Make sure all headlights, taillights, and brake lights are working correctly. Check your brake pads and brake fluid levels and have your battery tested. Schedule any maintenance that needs to take place before you can take off.

Is your GPS up to date?

If you have a GPS system in the car or on your smartphone, validate that it is working properly and all maps are up to date. Check your planned route in advance to make sure there isn’t any construction or any road closures. Bring extra copies of any directions, addresses, or confirmation numbers you may need at your journey’s end.

Arrange for the worst.

Make up an emergency kit of both personal and car related items to keep in your trunk along with your spare tire. The car emergency kit should include a flashlight, jumper cables, an extra set of clothes and a small tool kit. For personal safety, a first aid kit, bottled water, and a couple blankets are always good to have.

Entertainment is key!

A dirty car is no place to spend part of your holiday. Vacuum the car and wash the windows inside and out. Pack drinks and snacks as well as napkins and hand wipes, maybe even a trash bag to help contain the garbage. Help pass the time with a brand new playlist or a new movie.
